Magnitude has already beaten Forever Young in the Dubai World Cup and Sovereignty in the Stephen Foster. His 114 Beyer in the Stephen Foster is a career-best and shows he can compete at this level.

Baeza is a closer with proven stamina and the ability to compete against elite horses. He finished second to Magnitude in the Stephen Foster, ahead of Sovereignty, and fourth behind Sovereignty in the Whitney.

Beyer Speed Figures are one way to compare the raw speed these horses have shown, but the circumstances behind each figure matter.
Bars start at a baseline of 80. Beyer and Equibase Speed Figures are different measurements and are never mixed here.
Why the Beyer Numbers Matter
The highest career Beyer doesn't necessarily identify the horse in the best current form. Knightsbridge is the clearest example: he owns a remarkable 122, but his most recent Beyer was 104.
Sovereignty has a lower career ceiling at 115, but his most recent Beyer was 112, which makes his current figure particularly important. Forever Young's 105 last-out figure is also notable because it came in his first race in about six months.
The goal isn't simply to find the horse with the highest number. It's to find which horses can produce their best number on October 31.
The 1¼-Mile Question
The Classic is run at 1¼ miles, which makes proven performance at the distance one of the most important factors to weigh.

Jockey Club Gold Cup
- 1st Forever Young (105 Beyer)
Won by 3¼ lengths at 1¼ miles in his return from a lengthy layoff. Sovereignty missed the race with a foot abscess.
Projected Classic Pace
The pace will become increasingly important as the final field develops. The biggest handicapping question isn't necessarily which horse has the fastest raw speed. It's who gets the right trip?

If Knightsbridge and Magnitude both insist on the lead, the pace could get contentious, which would help a closer like Baeza. If one of them gets loose on an easy lead, the stalkers and closers have a much harder job. We'll add a projected pace map once the field is set.
Keeneland Breeders' Cup Classic History
Keeneland has hosted the Breeders' Cup three times before.

The Back-to-Back Storyline
The Breeders' Cup Classic was first run in 1984. Only one horse has ever won it twice in a row: Tiznow, in 2000 and 2001.
If Forever Young wins again, he'll become only the second horse in history to win consecutive Classics.
