Albus
Trainer: Riley Mott
Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione
Albus has shown steady improvement in each of his three career starts. Last out, he broke his maiden by over six lengths at a mile and forty yards—an eye-catching performance. However, he’s stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for the first time, which is a big step up. To contend in this field, Albus will need to take another big leap forward.
Chief Wallabee
Trainer: Bill Mott
Jockey: Jr. Alvarado
One of the standout contenders in this field, Chief Wallabee ran second to Commandment in the Fountain of Youth, earning a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. He had a wider trip last time and still finished strongly, suggesting he can improve with a better tactical trip from the two post.
By Constitution out of a Medaglia d’Oro mare, Chief Wallabee is bred for stamina and distance, making him well-suited to the mile-and-an-eighth. He’s professional with a strong closing kick, and could be poised to take the lead in the stretch if the pace unfolds favorably.
Wayne’s Law
Trainer: Amador Sanchez
Wayne’s Law has shown improvement recently, finishing second in the Sam F. Davis Stakes behind Renegade with an 86 Beyer. While versatile and speedy, he’s facing a very tough field, and will need to improve again to contend. Likely to be tracking the pace early, his best hope is to take advantage if the front-runners tire.
Commandment
Trainer: Brad Cox
Jockey: Flavien Prat (Irad Ortiz guided him to his last 3 victories.)
Commandment comes off a Fountain of Youth victory, where he earned a 101 Beyer and bested Chief Wallabee in a stretch duel. Bred by Into Mischief out of Sippican Harbor by Orb, he’s built to handle the mile-and-an-eighth. Commandment has won his last three races, improving each time, and possesses the tactical speed to sit just off the pace or make a mid-race move. He’s a proven professional, but may have to fight for position early depending on how the pace shapes up.
Redland Rebels
Trainer: Patrick Biancone
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Redland Rebels is more of a pace influence than a top contender. He finished second to The Puma in the Tampa Bay Derby and will need significant improvement to challenge the elite horses here. While fast and capable of pressing the pace, his role in this race may be more about shaping the early fractions than contending for the win.
Nearly – My Top Pick
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Jockey: Johnny Velazquez
Nearly is coming off a dominant Holy Bull Stakes victory, winning by more than five lengths with a 98 Beyer. Pletcher has been teaching him to settle early—a key factor given the likely fast early pace.
By Not This Time, Nearly fits this distance perfectly. Tactical, versatile, and fresh, he looks set to secure the ideal trip just off the pace. If everything breaks right, Nearly should be extremely tough to catch in the stretch and is my top pick to win the Florida Derby.
Timeless Victory
Timeless Victory won his last start at this distance by over six lengths, but this is a major step up in class. Nearly beat him by over nine lengths two starts ago, and without a massive improvement, his chances look slim. He’s capable but unlikely to threaten the top contenders.
The Puma
Trainer: Gustavo Delgado
Jockey: Javier Castellano
The Puma captured the Tampa Bay Derby in impressive fashion, defeating solid rivals like Further Ado and Canaletto. While his Beyer of 89 looks light, he was wide throughout and finished strongly, indicating potential to perform better. He’s wheeling back in just three weeks, which raises freshness questions, but if ready, he could be a serious threat to Nearly, Chief Wallabee, and Commandment. Tactical and professional, The Puma is versatile and capable from just off the pace.
Gregarious
Gregarious is almost certainly going to set the early pace. He will need a drastic improvement to contend and realistically serves as a key pace influence for this race.
Florida Derby Pace & Trip Analysis
Here’s how I see the pace shaping up:
Gregarious – expected to lead, setting honest, fast fractions.
Redland Rebels – likely just behind Gregarious in second.
Nearly – sitting in third, the perfect spot for a stretch move.
Albus & The Puma – stalking the pace, ready to pounce.
Commandment, Timeless Victory, Chief Wallabee – further back, waiting for their stretch opportunity.
If Gregarious sets an honest pace, it sets the race up perfectly for Nearly, who can sit a perfect trip, move late, and be very difficult to catch.
Florida Derby Top Betting Picks
Nearly – Tactical advantage, freshness, perfect distance fit, and ideal trip.
Chief Wallabee – was stuck wide in the Fountain of Youth, strong win potential.
Commandment – proven talent, coming into this with 3 wins in a row.
The Puma – major threat if ready to run back quickly.
Exacta Play: Nearly over Chief Wallabee
This race will come down to pace, trip, and stamina. Nearly is positioned to take full advantage, Chief Wallabee is stalking with upside, Commandment is talented but tactical, and The Puma could shake up the race if fit.
