Dubai World Cup 2026: Full Field Analysis and Top Picks
The $12 million Dubai World Cup is one of the most prestigious races in global horse racing—and this year, the lineup is absolutely stacked. Elite runners are shipping in from the U.S., a superstar from Japan is aiming for another international triumph, and a talented group of Dubai-based horses will fight to defend their home turf.
On paper, Forever Young is the favorite and looks like the horse to beat—but in a race this deep, things rarely go exactly as the public expects. With 1¼ miles at Meydan, international travel, and a mix of running styles, anything can happen. There’s significant value to be found if you look beyond the obvious choice, and that’s where I’m focusing my attention.

U.S. Contenders: Who Can Handle the Mile and a Quarter?
Let’s start with the American runners shipping in for this race.
Magnitude: My Top Pick
Magnitude, trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Jose Ortiz, comes in red-hot off a win in the Razorback Handicap, posting a 102 speed figure. He also captured the Clark Stakes, defeating Hit Show in the process. His top figure of 108 proves he belongs in this elite group.
What stands out about Magnitude is his ongoing improvement and tactical versatility. He can position near the lead, avoid traffic issues, and stay in striking range through the stretch—a critical advantage in a deep, competitive field.
The main question is the distance. In the Travers Stakes, he tried 1¼ miles and faded late, which is a concern. But here’s the angle: if Forever Young doesn’t bring his A-game, Magnitude is the most likely to take advantage. At his current price, he represents a strong value play and is my top pick for this year’s Dubai World Cup.
Hit Show: Defending Champion
Hit Show, last year’s winner at over 40-1, is back to defend his crown. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, he has experience shipping internationally and comes off a Grade 3 Mineshaft Stakes victory.
The challenge for Hit Show is that his speed figures are slightly below the very top tier in this field. He also lost to Magnitude in a recent start, which gives some perspective. While Hit Show is a consistent and classy competitor, in this stacked field, he’s more of a strong show candidate than a likely winner. Back-to-back wins in a race of this quality would require a near-perfect trip.
Dubai-Based Horses: Local Knowledge Meets Elite Competition
The Dubai contingent brings its own set of threats, with local experience and Meydan familiarity.
Meydaan: The Rail-Saving Specialist
Meydaan has won two of his last three starts, including the Al Maktoum Classic over the same distance. Under William Buick, he saved ground along the rail and finished strongly to pull away late.
Much of Meydaan’s early career was on turf and synthetic surfaces, but the switch to dirt has clearly unlocked his peak form. If he can replicate a perfect trip against this tougher international field, he could surprise—but everything has to go right.
Imperial Emperor: Godolphin’s Big Hope
Imperial Emperor is arguably the strongest Dubai-based horse on paper. Winner of the Grade 1 Al Maktoum Challenge, he skipped the Classic this year and trained specifically for the World Cup—a significant shift from last year’s 11th-place finish.
While improved, he still appears just a notch below the top U.S. runners and Forever Young. If things break perfectly, he’s in contention, but he isn’t my top choice.
Tumbarumba, Walk of Stars, and Tap Leader
Tumbarumba has been steady, finishing second in the Al Maktoum Challenge and third in the Saudi Cup, but winning here seems unlikely.
Walk of Stars ran second in the Maktoum Classic but hasn’t won this year, and his form suggests he won’t overtake the top contenders.
Tap Leader has been consistent at Meydan, but against global champions, he’d need a pace meltdown to have a shot—a very long-shot scenario.
International Star: Forever Young
The Japanese superstar Forever Young, trained by Yoshito Yahagi and ridden by Ryusei Sakai, is the standout talent in the field. With 14 career starts, 11 wins, and 3 thirds, he’s never off the board. Recent victories in the Saudi Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic cement his status as the best classic-distance dirt horse in the world.
The only caution is his 3rd-place finish in last year’s Dubai World Cup. Even elite horses can falter at Meydan under its unique conditions. Forever Young is likely the horse to beat, but at a short price, he lacks value for bettors looking for upside.
European Entry: Heart of Honor
Heart of Honor is the sole European entrant, coming off a seventh-place finish. Trained by Jamie Osborne, he would need a dramatic turnaround to factor in at this level.
Top Picks and Betting Strategy
After evaluating the entire field, here’s how I see it shaping up:Magnitude – Top pick. Combines tactical speed, current form, and upside. Can win if he handles the distance.Forever Young – Second pick. The clear talent in the race, but at a short price, he’s less appealing for value bets.Hit Show – Third pick. Consistent and classy, but slightly below the elite tier.
From a betting perspective, I’m playing Magnitude to win, with Forever Young in the exacta. That combination offers the best balance of upside, talent, and price.
