Bluegrass Stakes 2026 Breakdown & Picks | Further Ado, Class President or a Rising Star?
The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner, and the Bluegrass Stakes is shaping up to be one of the most exciting preps of the trail. This field is loaded with future Derby contenders, and the pace could be fast from the start. Whether you’re a casual fan or a serious bettor, understanding the key horses, jockeys, and running styles is critical for making smart plays.
In this post, we’ll break down each major contender, analyze the pace scenario, and share top betting picks and strategies for the race.
2026 Bluegrass Stakes Field | Contenders to Watch
Talkin
Talkin made his debut as a 3-year-old in the Tampa Bay Derby, finishing a solid fifth behind the favorite in this field, Further Ado. He’s by Good Magic, the 2018 Bluegrass Stakes winner, which gives him excellent pedigree credentials.
However, there’s a caveat—Talkin has only raced this distance once before and faded late in that effort. He’s coming into this prep off a recent 1st/66 four-furlong workout in roughly 48 seconds, but he’ll need to elevate his performance to contend for the win. Watch closely for how he handles the stretch run today.
Class President
Trained by Todd Pletcher, a four-time winner of the Bluegrass Stakes, Class President is coming off an impressive Rebel Stakes victory, earning a 91 Beyer while fending off Silent Tactic in the stretch.
This is only his second time routing, and he retains Johnny Velazquez as his rider. He already has 50 points from his Rebel win—likely enough to secure a Kentucky Derby berth—but connections are expected to bring their A-game for this Grade 1 event. Class President is a must-watch and could deliver a big performance here.
Great White
Great White captured the John Battaglia Memorial, defeating Full Effort, who later won the Jeff Ruby. While the Beyer in that race was a modest 84, the victory has held up well, and he’s bred for dirt, making this his first start on the surface.
However, being by Volatile, the mile-and-an-eighth distance could test his stamina. Can he sustain his late kick under pressure? That will be the key factor in his performance today.
Reagan’s Honor
Trained by Cherie Devaux, Reagan’s Honor has been on an upward trajectory with back-to-back wins, steadily rising in class. His most recent performance was dominant—a six-length allowance victory against older horses, earning a 96 Beyer.
With Jose Ortiz aboard, Reagan’s Honor is a stakes-capable colt built for classic distances. By Honor A.P. out of Rutile by Medaglia d’Oro, he blends stamina, class, and versatility, making him a well-balanced Kentucky Derby prospect and a serious contender in this race.
Creole Chrome
Creole Chrome was scratched from the Gotham Stakes but rebounded in a Louisiana-bred stakes race, grabbing the lead early and maintaining it to earn an 87 Beyer.
He started his career with Paco Lopez, then ran with Axel Conception, and now will be ridden for the first time by Tyler Gafflione. While Gafflione is talented, he tends to force horses to run his style, which could be a concern. Additionally, stretching out to a mile-and-an-eighth for the first time, combined with being by Volatile (a son of Violence), leaves questions about his stamina for this distance.
Further Ado
Further Ado is the morning line favorite at 8/5 and clearly has the talent to win. He ran second to The Puma in the Tampa Bay Derby—who later finished an impressive second to Commandment in the Florida Derby—and, like The Puma, was stuck wide for much of that race.
If he can return successfully after three weeks, he’s a live win threat. As a 2-year-old, he broke his maiden by 20 lengths, earning a field-high 98 Beyer. While his Tampa Bay performance shows he’s back in form, the short 8/5 morning line does make him slightly overbet, especially with other proven stakes horses in contention.
The Outside Contenders
The three outside horses—Ocelli, Moonstracity, and Ottinho—are all 20-1 or higher on the morning line. Rightfully so, as some are trending downward and none have proven they can compete with the top contenders. Ottinho is intriguing as a half-brother to Gun Runner trained by Chad Brown, but the class of this field makes it unlikely for any of the outsiders to take the win.
Pace Analysis
Moonstracity has shown the fastest early pace in recent starts and will likely try to do the same here. Talkin, Class President, Reagan’s Honor, Creole Chrome, and Further Ado all also possess early speed, but each has demonstrated the ability to press or rate off the pace, showing professionalism in keeping the race fair.
For horses coming from mid-pack and the back, Great White, Ottinho, and Ocelli are expected to close late, with Ottinho showing the fastest kick among them. The early fractions could prove decisive, so watching the pace setup will be crucial.
Top Betting Picks for the Bluegrass Stakes
Class President (Scratched) – His Rebel Stakes performance was impressive, stretching out for the first time while fending off Silent Tactic in a fast early pace. At the 7/2 morning line, he offers excellent value and is my top pick to win.
Further Ado – Despite the short 8/5 morning line, he has the talent to back it up and appears to be returning to top form. If he handles the short rest, he’s a live threat.
Reagan’s Honor – With strong recent performances and pedigree to match, Reagan’s Honor is ready for this class and distance.
For betting strategy, consider a win bet on Reagan’s Honor at 2 or better and include him in exactas with Further Ado and Great White for a balanced mix of value and elite talent.
