A year after a fever kept him out, Sovereignty ran down his own stablemate to win the Classic. The defending champion ran 5th, the Derby winner 6th, and an unbeaten 2-year-old became an early 2027 Derby favorite, with one history stat working against him.
A year ago, Sovereignty missed the Breeders' Cup Classic with a fever. On Saturday at Keeneland, he came back and beat his own stablemate to win it.
The defending champion finished 5th. The Kentucky Derby winner finished 6th. And on Friday, an unbeaten 2-year-old made himself one of the early favorites for the 2027 Kentucky Derby. Below: how the Classic was won, how our picks did, the other big stories from the weekend, and the stat that should make you pause before you crown Hughes.
Saturday · $7 million · 1¼ milesHow Sovereignty Won the Classic
The race changed before the gates opened. Magnitude was scratched Saturday morning on veterinary advice; a scan found damage to the suspensory fibers in his left front leg, and Coolmore announced his retirement. That took one of the main speed horses out of a seven-horse field and changed the pace picture.
Without him, Knightsbridge went straight to the front along the rail, with Forever Young tracking right behind. Sovereignty sat about 5th, saving ground on the inside. On the far turn, Junior Alvarado tipped him out, and he went after the leader. He ran down stablemate Knightsbridge at the top of the stretch and drew off to win by 1¾ lengths in 2:00.36.
“No other horse could have come in faster than the way he was going at the end.” — Junior Alvarado
Mott, who missed this race with him a year ago, put it simply: “I'm not so sure he couldn't have done it last year, but it just wasn't meant to be.” Godolphin's decision to keep Sovereignty in training at 4 paid off in the biggest way. It was Mott's third Classic win and his first since 2011, and Godolphin's first Classic win as a breeder. Sovereignty now retires to stand at Jonabell Farm in Lexington.
| Finish | Horse | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sovereignty | 9-5; ran down Knightsbridge in the stretch |
| 2 | The Puma | 17-1; rallied from 6th |
| 3 | Knightsbridge | Set the pace, held on for 3rd |
| 4 | T O Password | 30-1 on the morning line |
| 5 | Forever Young | 8-5 favorite; faded in the stretch |
| 6 | Golden Tempo | Never a factor |
| 7 | Napoleon Solo | Last |
The $1 exacta (2-4) paid $31.30, and the 10-cent superfecta paid $131.71.
Owning itHow Our Picks Did
I'll own this one. My top pick in the Classic was Forever Young, and he got exactly the trip I wanted, sitting right behind the leader. But when they turned for home, he just didn't have it.
Friday was a winning day; Saturday was not. Six favorites won over the weekend, and we were against several of them. I'd rather tell you that straight than only show you the tickets that cashed.
DistaffNitrogen Answers the Big Question
All year, Nitrogen's best races had come on or near the lead, and the question was what happened if she didn't get it. On Saturday, she didn't. She broke a step slowly and had to race behind horses, and Jose Ortiz waited. He moved her into contention on the far turn, she took over at the top of the stretch, and she pulled away to beat Fully Subscribed by 2 lengths.
She proved she doesn't need the lead to win at the highest level. Better news for racing fans: she's staying in training. Her owners are talking about a short break at Mark Casse's Florida farm and a possible start against males in the Pegasus World Cup in January.
Around the cardThe Other Stories Worth Knowing
Dirt Mile: Further Ado by a nose. The even-money favorite got the better of Owen Almighty in a photo. Remember, Further Ado is the horse The Puma beat in the Pennsylvania Derby, so The Puma's 2nd in the Classic was no fluke.
Aidan O'Brien makes history. He won the Juvenile Fillies Turf with Sun Goddess and the Juvenile Turf with Haffner on Friday, then came back Saturday to take the Turf with Benvenuto Cellini. Ryan Moore rode all three. O'Brien finished the weekend with 24 Breeders' Cup wins, passing Bob Baffert (22) for the most all-time.
Sprint: T O Elvis for Japan. Off more than five months, T O Elvis won for trainer Daisuke Takayanagi and jockey Ryusei Sakai, with Englishman 2nd.
Mile: an emotional one. Deterministic beat the favorite, Notable Speech, for trainer Miguel Clement, who took over the stable after his father, Christophe Clement, died. It was the first Breeders' Cup win for both Clement and jockey Kendrick Carmouche.
Flavien Prat's big weekend. He won three: the Juvenile with Hughes, the Filly & Mare Sprint with Ways and Means, and the Dirt Mile with Further Ado.
Juvenile · FridayHughes Does What a Favorite Should
Hughes stayed involved early, tracking the pacesetter on the rail, and took over by the three-quarter pole. Coach Pope tracked him on the outside and faded to 4th. When American History came wide to challenge, Hughes dug in and pulled away to win by 2¼ lengths in 1:42.27. He's now unbeaten in five starts, and he's one of the early favorites for next year's Kentucky Derby.
Baffert called him “a really superior 2-year-old.” But before you pencil him in for the first Saturday in May, here's the stat I mentioned at the start.
Baffert himself pointed out something important: Hughes had never been challenged before Friday. He'd won every race on his own terms. He passed the first real test, but the Derby is a much harder one.

Names to know this winter
- 1Hughes Unbeaten Juvenile winner, but has to beat history.
- 2U.S.S. Valor Won the Champagne, skipped the Juvenile; hasn't met Hughes yet.
- 3American History Closed for 2nd in the Juvenile for Todd Pletcher.
- FEmphatic Won the Juvenile Fillies over Miss Monica. An early Kentucky Oaks name.
U.S.S. Valor is the first name that comes to mind as a challenger. He won the Grade 1 Champagne and skipped the Juvenile to focus on his 3-year-old season, so a Hughes vs. U.S.S. Valor matchup could be one of the stories of the winter. On the filly side, Emphatic won the Juvenile Fillies for Brendan Walsh and Tyler Gaffalione, holding off the favorite, Miss Monica.
One more to keep in mind: Golden Tempo, this year's Derby and Belmont winner, ran 6th in the Classic, but his connections plan to keep him in training. A year from now, he could be right back in this race.

This Breeders' Cup was the end of one era and the start of another. Sovereignty went out with a Classic win, Magnitude has been retired, Nitrogen is coming back, and the 2027 Derby trail already has real names in Hughes and U.S.S. Valor, with questions both still need to answer. The Derby preps heat up over the winter, and I'll break them down as they come.
